Sons jailed over mom's death by starvation
THREE brothers in Beijing were jailed for up to three years for abandoning their 80-year-old mother that led to her death by starvation, a court has ruled.
But the three men said they would appeal the conviction by the court in Tongzhou District and denied any responsibility for their mother's death, reported today's Beijing News.
The mother's body was found at her home when a family member visited in April last year.
Police believed she had been dead for at least 10 days.
The old lady surnamed Chai, who lived on her own, was found lying on a dusty ground, emaciated and skinny. An autopsy found she had nothing in her stomach and determined she died of organ failure caused by serious malnutrition, the report said.
Chai had five sons with the eldest aged 65. Her youngest son, who was her sole carer, died of alcoholic poisoning in 2007.
After his death, Chai lived alone and was rarely visited by her other four sons.
The relationship between the four sons was described as "terrible" by the neighbors and they often had disputes over their mother.
The conflicts worsened after the four decided to take turns to look after Chai after she broke her leg in late 2007. Each would care for her for a season according to the agreement they reached.
However, the second son beat and hurt the eldest son who refused to take his turn in early 2009 because of a dispute over the family home's ownership, the report said.
Chai died when the third son was on duty as carer.
