Soundproof windows for 314 households

HONGKOU District has finished installing soundproof windows on over 300 households living near the city’s elevated Middle Ring Road that is expected to offer some relief to the residents troubled for a decade by ear-splitting noise from the traffic.

The cutting-edge windows has double glasses to muffle sound with air ventilation at the bottom, an official with the Liangcheng sub-district government said.

“We can finally sleep through the night after a decade of noise and disturbance,” said Ni Weiren, whose apartment is only 50 meters away from the elevated road.

Installation work started in June at the 314 households living in several buildings along Shuidian Road. After the elevated road was built, the city’s traffic authority had set up a soundproof barrier along the road but it failed to muffle the sound due to design fault. The authority then changed the transparent barrier that was supposed to absorb the traffic noise while allowing drivers a passing view of the city’s landscape. But there was still no relief from noise for the residents in the vicinity.
