South Bund promenade offers river close-up

PEDESTRIANS will be able to get up close to the Huangpu River on a new promenade along the southern Bund area, it was announced yesterday.

Part of the S-shaped structure, stretching from the south of the Bund to Nanpu Bridge, will snake out onto the river, officials said.

There will also be riverside platforms outside the promenade’s floodwall, according to the plan.

And while these platforms will be out of bounds during the summer flooding season, riverside views will still be available as the floodwall will be built from reinforced glass, said Huang Yilun, the engineer with the Shanghai Urban Planning and Design Institute in charge of the project.

All this means closer access to the river, compared to existing promenades, said Huang.

At the Bund promenade, for instance, visitors stand high on the bank to view the river rather than actually getting close to the water, Huang said.

The new promenade on the southern Bund will improve on that while ensuring safety, according to Huang.

The promenade will stretch several hundred meters and feature parkland on the area curving out onto the river plus beach areas, Huang said.

It will be the first time a glass floodwall has been used on a large scale in Shanghai, and  will give visitors a better view of the river and across to the Pudong New Area.

Some existing buildings, including Dongjiadu Church and the Merchant Shipping Hall, will be renovated.

No timescale for the project were given yesterday.
