Spaniard arrested over drugs
A Spanish drug addict who allegedly flew to Shanghai with about 277 grams of marijuana in his stomach that he ate as a food bar has been arrested for smuggling drugs by prosecutors in Jing’an District.
The 28-year-old suspect, identified only as Anthony, is accused of buying marijuana in something resembling a chocolate bar for 1,200 euros (US$1,275) in a Spanish town on October 13.
Prosecutors say that later that night, he broke the bar into 24 pieces, wrapped them in transparent sheeting, and swallowed them.
He flew to Shanghai, arriving on October 15. He had tried to excrete them, but he failed and developed severe stomach pains and started to vomit.
Fearing he was dying, he was admitted to a Shanghai hospital on October 20. An x-ray showed foreign objects in his stomach which he couldn’t explain. He said he wanted instead to fly home to Spain for treatment.
But doctors called in the police.
Prosecutors said Anthony has worked as an English teacher in a Shanghai education institution since 2015.
