Special ambulances for newborns
TO meet the growing demand for neonatal medical transport, Shanghai will be introducing ambulances equipped with breathing machines and incubators over the next five years, the local government said yesterday.
It is one of six government initiatives to improve health services for women and children.
According to Wu Xiangyong, an official with the city's health and family planning commission, local medical centers that treat newborns with critical diseases have handled about 35,000 cases since they were established in 2008.
However, because the ambulances on the road now are not equipped to accommodate newborns, it takes more time to transport them.
“Currently, an ambulance first goes to a medical center to get a breathing machine and an incubator and then they pick up the baby,” Wu told Shanghai Daily. “If there is a special ambulance that already has this equipment, the baby’s treatment can start sooner.”
How many will be added to the fleet will be decided after the matter is analysed further.
“If too many are put into use, some of them will be a waste,” said Wu.
