'Spider Man' iPhone 4 thief jailed for 10 years

A THIEF who took his inspiration from American superhero Spider Man in a rooftop raid to steal 65 iPhone 4 handsets from a warehouse was jailed for 10 years yesterday.

The man, surnamed Lu, pleaded guilty and didn't appeal against the verdict.

Lu, 24, had worked at the national distribution warehouse for iPhone 4s for just two weeks, but in the short period he studied the layout of the warehouse in Jiading District and decided to steal the in-demand smartphones.

Lu said his inspiration came from Spider Man, and spent 2,000 yuan (US$308) buying professional rock-climbing equipment.

At dawn on November 29, last year, Lu climbed onto the roof of the warehouse along the fire-control passage and cut out a hole through glass sheeting, the Jiading District People's Court heard.

Using his rock-climbing equipment, Lu descended into the warehouse and cut off the power to surveillance cameras.

After stealing 65 iPhone 4s worth 300,000 yuan, he climbed out of the building by the same route and escaped by swimming across a creek.

The break-in skills astonished police who speculated the thief must be familiar with the warehouse. Lu was detained three days later.

All the stolen handsets were recovered as Lu didn't have time to sell them.

He also received a fine of 20,000 yuan.
