Spring Festival consumer woes
RUINED Chinese New Year’s Eve dinners and last-minute holiday cancelations were among complaints received by the city consumer rights watchdog over the Spring Festival holiday.
The Shanghai Consumer Rights Protection Authority said yesterday that it received 477 complaints during the week-long Spring Festival break — almost the same as last year.
Of these, 145 were about goods and 332 concerning services.
A total of 67 complaints were about food and restaurants, three more than last year, including seven concerning dinners on the Chinese New Year’s Eve — the most important meal of the year for many Chinese families.
Most involved complaints about food quality and short measures.
And with more restaurants taking online bookings, some complaints were from diners who arrived to find that their booking had been canceled or that staff had no record of it.
Some 123 complaints related to tourism — up 220 percent from last year’s Spring Festival. Of these, 64 were about accommodation and 32 regarding flights.
Some consumers said their bookings were not confirmed in time or cancelled arbitrarily by travel agencies, while some said their holidays were not to the standard promised.
