Staggered work times proposed
A SHANGHAI government think tank said it will consider staggering people’s working hours in a bid to help reduce traffic congestion during rush hour periods.
The announcement, by the Shanghai Government Development and Research Center, was made in response to a proposal from lawmaker Hu Min.
Hu said the government should divide people into five categories based on the sector in which they work — education, factory, hospital, administrative and office, and entertainment — and then allocate each a different start time.
At present, most people head to work between 8am and 9am, which causes a lot of congestion, Hu said.
“The plan could be successful if local firms are prepared to introduce flexible working hours,” the center said, adding that some employees should be allowed to work from home.
