State Grid ex-staffer jailed for bribery

A FORMER employee of State Grid Shanghai Electric Power Co has been jailed for five years for taking 260,000 yuan (US$41,860) in bribes in return for helping a friend’s company secure contracts, the Huangpu District People’s Court said yesterday.
The bribe money has been recovered and confiscated by the court.
The court heard that while an employee of a State Grid Shanghai Electric research institute, Tang Erqi took bribes from a private company owner surnamed Zhou, between 2009 and 2013, when Tang was responsible for some local transformer substation projects.
Prosecutors in Baoshan District uncovered Tang’s bribe-taking early this year. Tang confessed to the crime and returned the money after being arrested by police.
During the trial, Tang’s lawyer said that his client and Zhou are very close friends and since Zhou helped Tang on projects he responsible for, Tang decided to recommend Zhou’s company when he had the right to recommend someone to join his projects.
The lawyer also sought a lighter penalty for Tang as he had confessed to police.
But the court ruled that Tang had helped Zhou to obtain some profits through his position and there was not enough evidence to support the lawyer’s statement about having the “right to recommend.”
Meanwhile, Feng Jun, former general manager of State Grid Shanghai Electric Power Co, is being investigated by prosecutors over alleged bribe-taking.
