Store robber foiled by police and public
THE suspect of a failed robbery at a gold store in rural Shanghai yesterday was caught thanks to a concerted effort by police and public.
The robbery took place at a Laofengxiang Jewelry store at 36 Qinghe Road in Jiading District, about 8am.
Police said the suspect, a 37-year-old man surnamed Ye from southwestern China’s Sichuan Province, had injured a security guard at the gate of the store with a knife.
The guard, Shi Qiang, told Shanghai Observer that a person had dashed into the store as he had half opened the door for him. The suspect had a knife and used it to cause injury.
“I fought back after a moment of blankness and pressed him onto the floor,” Shi was quoted as saying. “But I suddenly felt dizzy and weak and had to let him escape.”
The woman who runs a shop next to the gold store witnessed the incident and chased after the suspect, calling for passers-by to join her, the website reported.
He was eventually subdued not far from the store by a motorcyclist and police officers.
That was only five minutes after the case was reported, police said.
Shi had several wounds to his face and was later treated at hospital.
The suspect told police officers that he wanted to rob the gold store because he was running short of money.
