Stores’ fish fail tests by watchdog

FISH sold in supermarkets — including Tesco and Carrefour — and city fish markets were found to contain banned fish drugs or excessive antibiotics, the Shanghai Food and Drug Administration said yesterday.

A total of 15 batches failed tests and detected drugs included a parasite killer used to keep fish alive. Nine batches were found to contain banned malachite green, which is linked to cancer.

The local FDA checked 159 batches of aquatic products in the second quarter of this year.

Those that failed have been removed from the shelves and recalled. The producers are facing punishment.

Supermarkets selling fish that failed tests included the Shanghai NGS Qingpu Supermarket Co, the Quyang branch of Shanghai E-Mart Supermarket Co, Shanghai Fengxian Tesco Supermarket Co, Qingpu Park outlet of Carrefour and Shanghai Century Lianhua Changning Supermarket Co.
