Strawberry pickers warned off organic
A RISE in the popularity of strawberry picking among local families has prompted a warning from the city’s agricultural authorities.
According to the Shanghai Agricultural Commission, consumers should be wary of any farm that promotes its fruit as being organic. The reason is simple: there are no organic strawberry growers in the city, and only one company, which has its headquarters in Taiwan, has even applied for organic certification, officials said.
To achieve such status, growers must comply with a set of strict criteria, covering things like soil and water quality, and the condition of the general environment, they said.
Shanghai has 1,666 hectares of strawberry fields of which half are in Qingpu District.
The “pick your own” idea is now so popular that the Qingpu government plans to open a strawberry park to lure even more families into spending their days gathering the fruit.
