Streaming site wins legal fight with cinema
IN the first case of its kind in the city, a private cinema has been ordered to pay 30,000 yuan (US$4,500) in compensation to video streaming firm iQiyi for infringing on the website’s exclusive movie rights, Yangpu District People’s Court said yesterday.
Private cinemas have become popular among young people who are attracted to the comfort and privacy. The cinemas, which are mainly located in office buildings and residential areas, usually have three to 12 small screening rooms. Customers can reserve rooms and select films stored in the cinema’s library.
According to iQiyi, two movies listed in the defendant Wangmu Cinema’s library can only be distributed online in the mainland via its streaming platform, as the company bought the exclusive rights to the movies.
In February, two movies that iQiyi owns the rights to were found in the cinema library.
The video streaming platform said the cinema violated its rights by showing the films and demanded 500,000 yuan in compensation.
