Student accused of killing ex-girlfriend
A postgraduate student has been arrested for allegedly stabbing his ex-girlfriend to death after pouring acid over her head, prosecutors in the Pudong New Area said yesterday.
The man surnamed Xu told prosecutors that his girlfriend, surnamed Zhou, said she wanted to break up with him in January because she had fallen in love with one of her classmates at Shanghai Maritime University.
Xu could not accept her decision and their relationship became progressively more hostile, said prosecutors.
Xu allegedly bought a knife, a bottle of hydrofluoric acid and six bottles of alcohol online and brought them to a campus lab.
On April 29, Xu allegedly got into an argument with Zhou again when he asked her over the phone to get back together with him.
The next day when he saw Zhou and her new boyfriend having breakfast in the canteen before going to the library, he became very angry.
After getting a knife and the acid from the lab, he approached the pair and asked for a “negotiation” session.
The two refused Xu’s request and attempted to call the police when Xu took out the acid, said prosecutors. He then grabbed Zhou, poured the acid on her head and stabbed her several times, they said.
Zhou later died of hemorrhagic shock in hospital.
