Student artworks inspired by tradition
WORKS inspired by China’s intangible cultural heritage went on display yesterday at Shanghai Great World.
The exhibition was previously held in Beijing, where it received acclaim from visitors and scholars alike.
All the 312 artworks on display were designed and created by the city’s university students. Since 2015, professionals have held workshops at the city’s major universities — including Shanghai University, East China Normal University and Tongji University — to preserve traditional arts.
The works cover a wide range of genres such as stone carving, embroidery, puppetry and porcelain.
Based on traditional craftsmanship, some items also boast fashionable elements to cater to contemporary tastes. Patterns and colors inspired by traditional Chinese paintings are blended with costumes and accessories.
Officials from East China Normal University said that they will present workshops on traditional Chinese festivals and tea-making techniques in the future.
Students from the university are displaying their works at the exhibition. Fu Haixian, an inheritor of traditional Chinese seal-making, also coached students.
