Student from Malaysia loved all things Chinese
TAN Wei, 20, from Malaysia, was one of the victims in Wednesday night’s deadly stampede.
The ethnic Chinese was a sophomore overseas student majoring in biotechnology at Zhejiang University in Hangzhou. Her cousin was visiting and they decided to travel to Shanghai to celebrate New Year on the Bund together. The pair were taken to Changzheng Hospital after the tragedy. Tan’s cousin is still receiving treatment for her injuries.
A fellow student, also from Malaysia, told Shanghai Daily yesterday: “Tan was open and liked smiling. She liked photography, traveling and riding bicycles. She especially liked China and Chinese food.”
Tan came to China to study in 2012 after graduating from high school in Malaysia. A fan of Chinese culture, she began learning Chinese at school and could speak it fluently, her friend said.
Other Malaysian students at the university realized Tan was missing after hearing about stampede on Thursday morning. They called her mobile phone but a doctor answered and said they had yet to find Tan. They later learned about her death from her brother. Tan’s mother flew to Shanghai on Thursday night.
The family loved China and Chinese people, Tan’s brother said.
Their father was the head of a village in Jenjarom and Tan and the family often visited China, a country that felt like a second home, he said.
“She liked smiling until her eyes were almost closed, so everyone who knew her would remember her smile,” he said.
He said Tan liked reading Chinese novels and that was one of the reasons she went to China to study. She liked the scenery in Hangzhou, so she chose Zhejiang University.
“She asked me to take her to a famous restaurant in Malaysia in the winter holiday, but I have no chance anymore,” the brother said.
