Student held after roommate murdered

A 21-YEAR-OLD Shanghai University student has been detained on suspicion of stabbing his roommate to death in the Pudong New Area, local police said.

According to the Oriental Morning Post, Tang Aolin, a sophomore at the university’s Ba-shi Automobile College, had a dispute with roommate Nie Guanghui, 20, also a student, around noon on Tuesday.

Reports said the dispute may have arisen from noise Tang was making while cleaning the room.

It is alleged that Tang stabbed Nie with a knife bought at a campus store.

Police received a report of the incident at about 1:54pm and held Tang at the scene.

Nie died in hospital at 3:10am yesterday.

Shanghai University said it grieved its student’s death.

Police said the case is still under investigation.
