Student hurt in Taiwan blaze flies home
AN 18-year-old Shanghai student injured in the Taiwan water park blaze was admitted to the city’s Ruijin Hospital yesterday.
Teresa Yip has burns to 37 percent of her body, particularly her arms and legs, with 25 percent categorized as third degree, the most serious level, said Dr Huan Jingning, director of the hospital’s burns department.
She will have surgery this week to remove dead tissue and will require several skin transplants over the next two to three months, doctors said.
Yip’s parents live in Shanghai, thepaper.cn reported.
Her mother is Shanghainese and her father a Hong Kong citizen.
Yip went to Taiwan on a trip with three friends and was taking part in the “Color Play Asia” event at the Formosa Fun Coast water park on Saturday when fire broke out after the crowd was sprayed with colored powder.
One person was killed and nearly 500 people were injured, almost 200 of them seriously.
