Student poisoner to be sentenced today

THE former Fudan University student who poisoned his roommate to death last April will be sentenced today.

Lin Senhao, 28, who was charged with intentional homicide for the killing of Huang Yang, will hear his fate at the Shanghai No. 2 Intermediate People’s Court. The ruling session will open at 10:30am.

The victim’s family have called for the death penalty for Lin and said they will appeal if he is given a lighter sentence.

Huang and Lin shared a room when they were postgraduate students at Fudan University’s School of Medicine.

Prosecutors said Huang died as a result of drinking water from a dispenser into which Lin had added about 50 milliliters of N-Nitrosodimethylamine.

Lin stole the highly toxic chemical from a lab at Zhongshan Hospital, while working there as an intern.

Though he claimed he planned only to play an April Fool’s Day prank, Huang fell sick after drinking the water on the morning of April 1 and died 15 days later in Zhongshan Hospital.

Lin was detained on April 12 after his fellow students reported him to police. He was tried for intentional homicide last November.

During the trial, prosecutors insisted Lin had killed Huang intentionally, as he had failed to speak out as his roommate lay dying.

Lin admitted adding the chemical to the water but denied trying to kill Huang. He said he just wanted to make his roommate sick.

Two days after the trial, Lin’s father sent two messages to Huang’s father, begging him to forgive his son. But Huang’s father has consistently called for the death penalty, saying he wants a life for a life.
