Suburban forests to be opened up for visitors

THE city is planning to open areas of suburban woodland to the public next year, officials said yesterday. The greenery authorities will install facilities in forests and arrange a management team to supervise them.

The woodland includes ecological forest, protected forest and orchards. Jinshan and Songjiang districts have the richest forest resources, said the Shanghai Greenery and Public Sanitation Bureau.

The bureau will issue more details, such as how much entrance to the forests will cost, next year.

"We're afraid that some facilities get large-scale investment but only limited visitors, which is a waste of resources," said Ding Qinhua, an official with the sanitation bureau.

"We want to charge fess according to the level of facilities on offer."

The city has more than 93,330 square meters of woodland, covering nearly 12 percent of its total land. At present, Shanghai has four forest parks, officials said.
