Subway smoker detained
A MAN was detained for five days for smoking at a local subway station and refusing to stub out, Shanghai police said yesterday.
A total of 409 subway smokers have been punished this year, out of which 21 were detained, police said on its official microblog.
In the latest case, the detained man, surnamed Yang, was caught smoking by police when he was walking through the passage at Yishan Road Station of Metro lines 3, 4 and 9 on October 24.
Police asked Yang to stub the cigarette but he refused, arguing there was no no-smoking signs.
Yang eventually agreed to stop but did not stub it out after throwing the cigarette on the floor.
He was then taken away by police, who said Yang had violated anti-fire law by smoking at a public venue.
