Summer holiday scheme expands

LOVE Summer Care, a popular government program that helps local parents who are unable to take their children away during the school holiday, will enroll 40,000 elementary school pupils this year — double the number it took in last summer.
Officials from Shanghai Youth League, which is coordinating the program, said priority will be given to low-income families.
About 400 locations are included in the program this year, up from 243 last year, and officials said support from local schools is vital to the expansion of the program.
In the Nanmatou Road community in the Pudong New Area, the program will be hosted by Pujing Middle School, which will accept 100 pupils, up from just 60 last year.
“A school is safer than a public institution where strangers come through all the time, easier for us to look after more kids, and also a more familiar environment for the kids to blend in faster,” said Jiang Shenyi, the neighborhood’s Youth League secretary.
The program, which is scheduled to start enrollment next Monday, will run for six weeks in two three-week sessions from mid-July.
The program, which encompasses a wide range of cultural and sports activities offered by various social partners, costs 600 yuan (US$91), which is much cheaper than commercial programs.
“Our survey showed that demand will drop if we raise the fee, so we decided not to because we hope this program will serve more people in need,” said Xu Su, head of the Department of School Affairs at Shanghai Youth League.
Officials said the program will cover all urban and rural communities this year, but with more resources allocated for urban districts where demand is higher.
About 100,000 high school students recruited from nearby schools will serve as volunteers alongside schoolteachers who are donating their time over the summer holiday.
