Summertime clothing may cause health woes

A recent clothing quality test showed that some summerwear bearing international brands, such as H&M, may cause allergic skin reactions and other conditions, quality authorities said yesterday.

The Shanghai Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision said six of 54 types of T-shirts failed the test, including a G-Star T-shirt and an H&M frock.

The national standard hp index for clothes ranges between 4 and 7.5, but the frock showed a reading of 8.5, said the bureau. H&M admitted that it didn't catch up with the country's new clothing quality standard and will improve the production technique in the future to meet it.

The firm said its clothes are safe if washed. But consumers can ask for refunds. All of the unqualified products have been removed from shelves, company officials said.

Meanwhile, a G-Star T-shirt sold at the Pacific Department Store on Huaihai Road was found to contain ten times the limit of formaldehyde. Excessive formaldehyde can cause skin allergies or even respiratory diseases.

All the questioned clothes have been ordered off store shelves, officials said.
