Sun Yang: the swimmer with smarts

TRIPLE Olympic champion Sun Yang is going to take a PhD at Shanghai University of Sport from September 20, the university confirmed in an enrollment notice yesterday.

The 26-year-old Hangzhou native claimed his third Asian Games title in the men’s 1,500-meter freestyle in Jakarta last month. He will be majoring in kinesiology.

Sun holds the world 1,500m freestyle record which he set during the 2012 London Olympics, making him the first Chinese man to win an Olympic gold in swimming.

He is also the first male swimmer to win Olympic and World Championship events at every freestyle distance from 200m to 1,500m.

Sun got a bachelor’s degree in education at Hangzhou’s Zhejiang University in 2014.

He then enrolled at Suzhou University for post-graduate study.
