Supervision over food delivery tightened

THE city’s food and drug administration is to strengthen supervision of food safety during the delivery process.

Detailed measures were released yesterday in a guideline for local law enforcement teams so they can better carry out the city’s new food safety regulations, which took effect from March 20.

According to the regulations, if a delivery platform is found to be flouting the rules, it faces penalties that can lead to the revoking of its operational license.

The new measures include having law enforcement teams checking if the delivery operator has obtained a food-handling health certificate.

The officials are also tasked with checking whether the delivery boxes or packages used to transport food have been properly cleaned and also that the food has not been stored in the same box as poisonous substances or raw food.

Cakes and similar products, aquatic products such as sashimi, or freshly made beverages must be delivered using thermal isolation boxes.

Cold and hot food should not be stored together and temperatures must meet relevant food safety requirements.

Packaging and tableware that might be in direct contact with food should also meet food safety requirements.

According to the 2016 food safety report released by the authority, the food catering section had the lowest passing rate among all food manufacturing and operation sections.

Only 94.6 percent of spot tests on food catering showed that standards had been met.
