Supplier of unsafe beef sent to jail
A man who sold unlicensed imported beef containing a banned addictive has been jailed for three and half years.
Putuo District People’s Court said police had seized more than 1.6 tons of beef at a warehouse owned by the defendant surnamed Dong, 22, last October.
Investigation showed the imported beef didn’t have inspection and quarantine certificates. Samples tested showed the beef contained ractopamine. The chemical was banned from being made or traded on the Chinese mainland in 2011.
Dong began selling the unsafe meat in a wet market in Putuo last August.
As well as his jail term, Dong was fined 60,000 yuan (US$8,830) for selling toxic and harmful food.
