Suspect held over holiday scam
A MAN has been detained on suspicion of cheating a group of friends out of 100,000 yuan (US$15,600) with the offer of a cheap holiday, police in Putuo District said yesterday.
The suspect was identified as a 29-year-old surnamed Liu, who is accused of advertising a tour package to Japan on the social media app WeChat.
In the advertisement Liu claimed to be a representative of a genuine travel company and so had access to the special deal, police said.
Though Liu had once worked for the travel agency, he had resigned several months earlier, they said.
The alleged victims comprised a group of eight friends who paid a combined 101,100 yuan for the trip, said police.
