‘Suspended space’ development begins

WORK began yesterday on a huge project to turn Xinzhuang Metro Station in Minhang District into a traffic hub and commercial center.

The 15 billion yuan (US2.4 billion) development features a “suspended space” over Metro lines which developers say is a first in China.

Three commercial buildings, a hotel and three residential buildings will be built in this suspended space by 2016, they said.

“They will be entirely sound-proofed so that residents and workers will be shielded from Metro and railway noise,” said He Bin, general manager of Shanghai Xintian Properties Co Ltd, which is spearheading the project.

The project, expected to be completed in 2022, features an elevated platform the size of five football pitches that will cap the current Xinzhuang station.

Shopping malls, office buildings and hotels will be built on the platform, said Yu Yong, deputy director of Minhang District.

“Minhang has a shortage of high-end hotels and shopping facilities. This project will fill the gap,” Yu said.

The project will see passenger flow at Xinzhuang station increase from 100,000 a day to 500,000, Yu said.

The station will also be linked to the Shanghai-Hangzhou and Jinshan mainline railways.

The bus station will also be expanded in the 700,000 square meter development that includes underground parking for 3,000 vehicles.

“It is the first ‘transit-oriented’ development project in Shanghai,” said He.

Metro services will not be affected during construction as passengers will use alternative passageways, said officials.

The plan was first put forward in 2007  but was delayed by adjustments.
