Sweet Chongming tangerines hit town
TANGERINES grown in suburban Chongming District will be sold at seven parks from tomorrow at wholesale prices to boost sales, with a good harvest and excellent fruit quality this year, the Shanghai Forestry Station said yesterday.
Favorable temperatures have boosted the harvest, which should come in at almost 160,000 tons.
Sunny weather during the ripening season last week also raised sugar levels and this year’s fruit should be sweeter, said Zheng Jie, an official with the station.
About 89,000 mu (5,930 hectares) of tangerines on Chongming Island have ripened and now is the ideal time to taste the sweet and succulent fruit, the station said.
Sales of Chongming tangerines were once sluggish due to lack of sales channels as Chongming is far from downtown and had poor transport links before the Changjiang Tunnel-Bridge was built. The difficulties of getting fruit to market prompted city authorities to step in several years ago and set up free stalls for farmers each harvest in downtown parks.
“The fruit turned out to be very popular as they quickly sold out within hours, and about 500,000 kilograms of tangerines were sold at one park in about 20 days,” said Zheng.
To ensure a stable production and good quality, farms on Chongming increased the amount of organic fertilizers used this summer and no serious plant diseases or insect pests cases were reported.
The wholesale price is 2.5-3 yuan (US$0.37-0.44) a kilo, slightly higher than previous years.
The tangerines will be sold at Zhongshan Park, Yangpu Park, Heping Park, Zhabei Park, Changfeng Park, Luxun Park and the Shanghai Botanical Garden. Sales will run through to November 30 and a kilogram of tangerines is priced at 3 yuan at these parks.
