Swindler jailed for 11 years
A swindler who conned 141 people out of nearly 800,000 yuan (US$117,715) for missold tour packages has been jailed for 11 years.
Pudong New Area People’s Court said the defendant, surnamed Jiang, 28, set up a travel business and offered group tours. But at the same time, he was losing heavily at gambling and started to cheat his clients.
One of them, surnamed Shen, along with 32 relatives and friends, paid Jiang 323,400 yuan to take part in a European tour. But Jiang claimed visa problems meant the tour had to be delayed.
As Jiang continued to lose at gambling, he persuaded Shen to bring in more people to join the tour at reduced rates. A further 31 people fell into his trap. Others were cheated via online posts.
Police caught Jiang last October. He admitted guilt but was unable to give back the money, the court added.
