Swindler’s many faces netted him 1.3m yuan

A CONMAN who claimed to different victims that he was a company chairman, a pilot and a child from a wealthy family in order to swindle 1.3 million yuan (US$213,200) was jailed for 12 years yesterday.

Prosecutors at Shanghai No.1 Intermediate People’s Court said Jiang Xijun, 28, a migrant from Anhui Province, befriended five women and a man to con them, between 2007 and 2011.

One victim, surnamed Wan, said she had a relationship with Jiang after meeting him through chatting tool QQ in 2009. He claimed to be overseas Chinese from France and a company chairman.

Wan said Jiang swindled 910,000 yuan from her, saying that he needed to pay employees, debts or invest in property. She sold an apartment and borrowed from her parents to get him cash.

Another victim, surnamed Yu, said Jiang claimed to her that he was a China Eastern Airlines pilot.

“He showed me many pictures of him and air hostesses when we met, which made me believe him,” said Yu.

Yu fell in love with Jiang and in 2011 lent him more than 100,000 yuan.

In other cases, he posed as a graduate from a communications university or a member of a wealthy family.

Jiang was sought online after police received victims’ reports. When he went to a police station in connection with an economic dispute in March, 2012, Jiang was recognized and held.
