TV drama sued over jelly death

A JELLY manufacturer is suing the makers of a television drama that features a scene where a child chokes to death on its product.

Well-known food manufacturer Want Want China’s Shanghai headquarters and Nanjing branch are suing four companies behind “Grow Up.”

Want Want claims they damaged its reputation after a scene showed a 4-year-old girl die after eating Want Want jelly, the Pudong New Area People’s Court announced yesterday.

In the lawsuit, which was accepted yesterday, Want Want is demanding 200,000 yuan (US$31,370) in damages, the court said.

The four producers, which including online giant Tencent, are also asked to cut the scene or pixelate the jelly on the four major domestic online video platforms where the drama can be seen.

They are also asked to issue an apology.

Episode seven of “Grow Up,” shown earlier this year, featured a surgeon recalling how his daughter Mei Mei died after choking on jelly.

The plaintiff said that the drama used a jelly with its brand name in this scene and even had a close-up of its product.

Want Want claims that this brought a huge loss to its brand value, with parents reluctant to give their children jelly afterward.

“Grow Up,” starring actor Lu Yi and actress Bai Baihe, has been broadcast on local Dragon Television.
