Taiwan writer wins rights case
WELL-KNOWN Taiwan writer Pai Hsien-yung was awarded 250,000 yuan (US$40,158) in compensation after the Shanghai No.2 Intermediate People’s Court ruled in his favor yesterday.
The court ordered two local media companies to pay the amount to Pai for copyright infringement. The two companies staged a play based on Pai’s short stories without seeking his approval.
Pai, the author of short story “Zhe Xian Ji,” authorised Shanghai Film Group to adapt the story for a film in 1989. However, in October, Pai saw advertisements that a play based on his writing was being performed in Shanghai. He sued them.
