Take detour from detour, drivers told

DRIVERS in the Pudong New Area are being asked to take alternative routes after detours around roadworks at Pudong Avenue became gridlocked yesterday.

This comes after a major stretch of Pudong Avenue closed at the weekend for five years during the construction of a “triple-decker” tunnel, road and Metro project.

Changyi Road, running parallel to the closed stretch, saw the biggest jams of the morning rush, with 90 percent more vehicles than usual on the road, traffic police said.

It had been designated as a major alternative road to the avenue by the city traffic authority.

The morning rush hour on the section between Pudong Road S. and Xiepu Road ran from 7am to 10am — an hour longer than usual, said traffic police officer Li Qianlong.

Drivers are advised to instead use Zhangyang Road and Yanggao Road, which are less affected by the construction.

Work on the Pudong Avenue stretch is set to last until 2019.
