Taobao sues seller of fake liquor

A vendor selling fake upmarket liquor on Taobao is being sued by the retail website for damaging its reputation.

Taobao has launched a recent crackdown against people using the site to sell counterfeit goods. In this case, a man surnamed Xu started selling fake liquor purporting to be Wuliangye spirit in 2015. The illegal trade was soon discovered by the platform.

Bottles bought from Xu’s store were sent to the Wuliangye Group for testing. Results showed they were fake.

Wuliangye sued Wu in the Xuhui District People’s Court in September 2015. The court ordered Xu to pay 70,000 yuan (US$10,160) to the group for infringing its brand.

Now Taobao has filed a lawsuit against Xu, claiming 100,000 yuan in damages. The Songjiang District People’s Court has accepted the request and is set to open trial in late June.
