Taxi driver nabbed over lost wallet
A TAXI driver has been detained on suspicion of stealing a wallet from a drunken passenger, police said yesterday.
The alleged theft took place on May 18, after the passenger, surnamed Ji, fell asleep in the vehicle after being picked about 11pm near People’s Square.
When he awoke, he noticed his wallet missing and accused the driver — who was not named — of stealing it, police said.
Ji claimed the wallet was worth 6,000 yuan (US$970) and that it contained several bank cards and 7,180 yuan in cash.
When confronted, the driver is alleged to have returned the wallet, but Ji was not satisfied and called the authorities.
As he was doing so, the driver tried to flee the scene in his vehicle, police said.
The cabby drove away, but Ji refused to let go of the car door, they said, adding that the vehicle came to a halt only when members of the public surrounded it.
