Taxi driver’s shortcut costs his job

A taxi driver who dropped his passenger by the roadside near Pudong International Airport not long after picking her up and told her to take another taxi has been fired.

The incident occurred on Friday night and the driver’s employer, Shanghai Dazhong Taxi Co, announced his sacking yesterday.

The driver, surnamed Zhang, was under fire on the Internet after the passenger used social networks to complain about the incident.

The driver was promptly investigated by the Shanghai Traffic Law Enforcing Team and is alleged to have said he dropped his passenger off early as her journey was short — 20 kilometers — so he could return to the airport with the chance of finding someone wanting a further and more lucrative destination.

Pudong airport allows taxi drivers who depart from the taxi stand with passengers and return within an hour not to have to wait in line after other taxis for new passengers.

Zhang is not believed to be alone in kicking passengers out early so as to get priority taxi slots back at the airport.
