Taxi thief jailed
A passenger who stole 2,200 yuan (US$354) from two cabbies was sentenced to nine months in prison with a fine of 1,000 yuan, a local court said yesterday. The man, surnamed Li, would ask the cabbie to go to a destination the driver didn’t know and rob him when he was looking up the place on a map Li provided.
Li got into a cab on February 8 last year and asked the driver, surnamed Zhou, to head to Shenjiang Road in the Pudong New Area. When Zhou said he didn’t know the route, Li took out a map and placed it on the steering wheel and pretended to find the way with Zhou. Li stole 1,400 yuan from under the steering wheel while Zhou was concentrating on the map. Using the same method, he stole 800 yuan from another cabbie on April 1.
