Teacher sentenced after student dies
A university teacher who took a student to his wax factory to do a “dangerous experiment,” causing a blast that killed the student and two workers, was sentenced to two years with a three-year reprieve.
He was charged with causing an accident by using dangerous materials, Qingpu District People’s Court said.
Zhang Jianyu, 55, a chemical engineering teacher at East China University of Science and Technology, also ran the Shanghai Joule Wax Company in Qingpu. To avoid going through the complicated procedures required by the university’s lab, Zhang took Li Peng, a second-year master’s degree student, to do an experiment at his wax factory on May 23, the court said.
Zhang used the company’s name to buy 50 kilograms of sodium rhodanate and 50 kg of sodium nitrate and asked two of the factory workers to assist Li in the experiment. Then, Zhang left the factory, the court said. Without his guidance, the three failed to follow the right procedures, which triggered the strong chemical reaction between the two hazardous substances. The three were killed at the scene.
The court said Zhang was given a lighter sentence because he had confessed his crime and had compensated the victims’ families.
