Teahouse scammers nabbed
THE owners of a local teahouse were detained for five days, had their license revoked, and were fined 500,000 yuan (US$77,000) yesterday for cheating two Japanese tourists by charging them an exorbitant price for ordinary tea.
Guo Guangbin and Chen Kun, co-owners of the Shanghai Yiketing Tea Industry Company, were detained for illegally disturbing the public order, Huangpu police said.
In a common scam targeting foreigners, accomplices hired by the teahouse asked tourists to take pictures of them near Yuyuan Garden on April 6 and coaxed them to go to the teahouse at 299 Jinling Road M., where they drank tea and were given a 1,040-yuan bill.
The district government said it will crack down on tea scammers by stepping up police patrols at local tourism spots and closely monitoring nearby pubs, teahouses and stores. About 30 foreigners have been cheated in over 20 similar scams over the last 12 months. District police have detained 66 people and prosecuted 11 suspects.
