Teen gets 6 years for burglary

A TEENAGER who climbed into a neighbor's home and injured two men with knives - one seriously - was sentenced to six years in prison and a fine of 3,000 yuan (US$482) for burglary, the Changning District People's Court said yesterday.

The convict, Chen Ling, 17, who lived in a rental unit on the seventh floor of a residential complex in the district, climbed from his balcony to his eighth-floor neighbor's unit and smashed the living-room window with a wooden bench in May, the court said.

The homeowner and his son rushed to confront Chen. The intruder took out two knives and injured the father and son. The father, a painter, had serious cuts on his hands, prosecutors said. Chen fled, empty-handed.

Chen told the court he likes crime movies and especially enjoys how the characters wield knives. He said he took the knives to protect himself because he worked as a debt collector.

The teenager was given a lighter sentence due to his age, officials said. Convicts guilty of burglary usually are sentenced to at least 10 years in prison and the maximum penalty is death.
