Teen mother’s newborn found dead in bushes

THE lifeless body of a newborn baby girl was found in bushes at a residential complex in Nicheng Town in the Pudong New Area yesterday morning, police said.

The infant was discovered by a neighbor, who contacted the emergency services. Medics declared the child dead at the scene.

Police said it was not yet clear if the baby, who was naked, had been placed in the bushes, or if she had been thrown or fell from a window.

The mother has been identified as a 17-year-old girl who is being treated in hospital for complications following the birth.

Police said she had gone to hospital of her own some time before they were made aware of the case.

An investigation is under way.

Meanwhile, police in Putuo District said yesterday that they are still looking for clues to the identity of a baby boy who was found abandoned but in good health at an apartment building last Thursday.

The infant is estimated to be about 3 months old, according to doctors at Putuo District Central Hospital.

The youngster was found by a member of the public who contacted the police. Whoever left him provided no clues to his identity, police said.

As the compound is not fitted with surveillance cameras, officers are speaking to residents in a bid to trace his family. They have appealed to anyone with information about the case to come forward.

Hospital workers said that since the story was reported on local media they have been inundated with gifts and cash donations for the child. They appealed to the public not to send any more at this stage.

If no one claims the baby in the next two to three days he will be transferred to a children’s home, an official said.
