Teenager charged for killing newborn

AN 18-year-old mother who threw her newborn son from window has been charged with murder, Minhang District Prosecutors’ Office said yesterday.

The girl wasn’t even aware of her pregnancy until the birth of the child and said she was shocked at that time and could not explain why she threw the baby from the third floor.

The young mother, surnamed Yao, used to work for a local restaurant and dated  a colleague. After she broke up with him she changed her job. She said she got hungry easily and started to gain  weight. On September 18 last year, she felt a stomachache and delivered a baby in the restroom in dormitory.

Shocked, she chucked the baby out of the window.

Yao said she did not know  the whereabouts of the baby’s father.

There have been several similar cases reported earlier this year.

On January 8, a 15-year-old schoolgirl gave birth to a baby boy in a restroom in her school in Hongkou District.

A teacher send the newborn to the hospital where  he died.

A woman who delivered a baby in a public restroom outside the Hongqiao Road Metro Station in Changning District was also rushed to the hospital in February. The unwed mother pleaded with the police not to inform her parents.

A 21-year-old waitress who gave birth in a restroom strangled the baby on March 14.
