Telecom giants shed VIP areas

CHINA’S telecom giants yesterday confirmed that they will close their VIP lounges at local airports next month.

This is in a bid to cut marketing expenses in line with the central government’s frugality campaign, they said.

But some observers claimed they were using this as an excuse to free themselves of an expensive burden.

China Mobile, China Telecom and China Unicom are required by the country’s state-asset supervisor to shut their VIP rooms from October and suspend all the services, the service providers announced.

“China Mobile will close the VIP rooms in Pudong and Hongqiao airports to implement the central government’s regulations that advocates frugality,” the telecom company said.

But Sun Jing, a civil aviation analyst, said the telecom giants wanted to free themselves of the expensive VIP lounges in any case.
