Tests point to perils of children鈥檚 scooters

NEARLY half of children’s scooters tested by the Shanghai Consumer Rights Protection Commission had quality issues that could lead to injuries, the commission said yesterday.
Of the 42 scooters tested, 20 had problems, such as holes or cracks that could lead to children’s fingers getting trapped in them. Others had tiny removable parts that could be swallowed or inadequate handlebars.
The ends of some handlebars were too small, less than the national standard of 4 centimeters in diameter, which could result in injuries if the scooters overturned.
Twenty-nine of the 42 samples were bought from the Internet and 13 from stores. Tests covered most major brands on the market. The scooters cost from 60 yuan (US$8.70) to 1,500 yuan.
The test results showed that child scooters are among the most unsafe juvenile toys on the market, according to the commission.
National standards for child scooters have been in force since January 1, 2016.
