Thief takes new car for ‘test drive’
A man stole a brand new vehicle worth more than 200,000 yuan (US$31,000) from a car dealer after taking it for a test drive on Wednesday afternoon in Jing’an District.
According to police, the suspect, whose identity has not been confirmed, arrived at a Honda dealership on Hutai Road at about 2pm for a reserved test drive.
The police said a staffer is usually required to accompany the customer during a test drive. However, as another car happened to be blocking the way, the suspect asked the staffer to move it out of the way.
When the staffer returned, the vehicle had been locked from the inside and the suspect drove away, police said.
The staffer told xinmin.cn that the contact number and driving license number the suspect gave when he made the reservation were fake. The stolen car is a white Honda Accord worth 217,000 yuan.
