Thief wanted cash for injuries in escape bid
A COURT has rejected a thief's plea for compensation from police after she was injured trying to escape arrest.
The Shanghai No. 2 Intermediate People's Court heard that the woman, surnamed Zhu, sneaked into a Shanghai International Port Ltd facility one morning in October 2008 to steal plastic. She was spotted by police and, in a haste to flee, squeezed into a pile of steel coils and got stuck.
Zhu told the court a policeman pressed her legs so she couldn't get out and she suffered head injuries. She said her injuries were caused by the police and asked for 12,400 yuan (US$1,850) compensation.
But the court said if the hole had been big enough for a policeman to hold her down then a forklift wouldn't have been needed to help free her. It didn't believe her story.
