Ticket prices slashed for fireworks festival

ORGANIZERS of the Shanghai International Fireworks Festival have cut ticket prices while promising that the firecrackers at the event will be more environmentally friendly than before.

Standing tickets were left unchanged — 70 yuan — but seated tickets are being sold for 230 yuan (US$37.34) this year — 30 yuan cheaper than last year. The festival will be held at Century Park from September 30 to October 6.

Standing tickets usually sell out quickly, Oriental Morning Post newspaper quoted Chen Zhongmao, an official with the Pudong New Area’s Business Commission, as saying.

But the central government dictates on government spending has led to poor sales of the more expensive seated tickets since last year. The seating tickets were usually purchased by companies or organizations, the paper reported.

Chen is hoping the newly adjusted price would bring in more spectators to the park.

He said the 30-yuan reduction was the best the organizers could offer given the rising cost of fireworks over the past few years, as well as the expense of inviting award-winning performers from home and abroad.

Among other things, the fireworks used during the festival will be more friendly to the skies, releasing less smoke and pollutants compared to the traditional ones, the organizers said.

As per the new air pollution regulations issued this year, fireworks will be banned during an orange alarm, which is issued when the AQI is “severely polluted” over 24 hours, though Shanghai’s air quality is relatively safe during spring and autumn seasons.
