Tight security at festival garden
SECURITY will be tightened at Yuyuan Garden for the upcoming Lantern Festival, the district government said yesterday, which means that visitors will have to go through safety checks before entering.
To control the number of visitors, the entire garden area will only be open to ticket holders from 4pm on Saturday and Sunday, and 2pm on Monday, the day of the festival this year, officials said.
In order to maintain order and control numbers, visitors to the Zigzag Bridge will be directed from the Wenchang Road area instead of the bridge entrance, officials said.
Visitors will have to to walk over the zigzag bridge in just one direction if the number of people in attendance is below 20,000, and five entrances out of eight will be closed and a one-way traffic policy will be imposed once the number of visitors hits 30,000. When the number approaches 40,000, the bridge will be closed.
The annual Lantern Festival display was cancelled last year due to safety concerns in the wake of the Bund stampede.
The parade this year will be led by a cartoon monkey figure with a golden gong, and the four characters from the classic novel “Journey to the West” will also feature.
Five additional parade performances will be held on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
Revellers are advised to take public transportation due to a shortage of parking spaces and the possible closure of roads, officials said. Medics will be onsite to assist in any emergencies.
An adult ticket is 50 yuan (US$7.69) and a child’s ticket is 30 yuan over the weekend, and that will rise to 80 yuan and 50 yuan respectively on Monday.
