Tighter passenger security ahead of forum

SECURITY has been tightened in Shanghai ahead of a two-day conference in the capital this week.
Passengers taking trains to Beijing from Shanghai have been subjected to strengthened security measures at the city’s railway terminals due to the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation being held in Beijing on Sunday and Monday.
Passengers have had their luggage rechecked in waiting rooms before boarding the trains. This would continue until the end of the forum, police said yesterday.
At Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station, where there are 39 trains leaving for Beijing every day, about 40 police officers have been assigned to the waiting room checks.
The measure has been in force since Saturday.
Police said they frequently discovered banned objects from the railway tourists — such as kitchen and table knives, imitation guns and pets.
Tourists are reminded not to bring more than two cigarette lighters when using trains.
Meanwhile, railway police said they are beefing up patrols to crack down on crimes and offenses in and around railway terminals and that security checks on trains have been strengthened.
Shanghai Airport Authority said yesterday that it will maintain lookouts for any potentially explosive materials at both Pudong and Hongqiao airports.
